The Vegan Cosmetics Market
The vegan cosmetics market is growing, driven by changing consumer preferences for ethical, sustainable and cruelty-free beauty products.
At present, there are no international or regional regulations with an official definition of vegan products. However, a brand may use the term “VEGAN” on its product if this claim complies with established criteria for cosmetic product claims.
At the very least, a vegan product is one that certifies the absence of animal testing on the product and its ingredients (bearing in mind that cosmetic testing on animals has been banned in Europe since 2013), and the absence of ingredients of animal origin in the product.
If a cosmetic product complies with these requirements, it can be considered “vegan”. It will therefore be possible to note “VEGAN” on the pack.
Up to now, in the absence of a mandatory context for companies, the use of the VEGAN claim has mostly been in the form of self-declaration. This means that companies are free to choose to use the vegan claim without third-party control. However, the interpretation made by companies’ marketing teams or quality managers is not always adequate.
To compensate for this lack of official definition, numerous labels and certifications have been created. These are independent and non-mandatory. However, they enable consumers to be sure that a cosmetic product complies with the specifications defined by the certification.
Each organization has its own requirements and its own definition of the term “VEGAN”.
The EVE Vegan certification mark is recognized as one of the most reliable on the market, and its standard as one of the most demanding in its category.
