The COSMOS Standard for Organic and Natural Cosmetics

The COSMOS standard for organic and natural cosmetics is an internationally recognized European standard. It was developed by 5 founding members: BDIH (Germany), COSMEBIO (France), ECOCERT (France), ICEA (Italy) and SOIL ASSOCIATION (UK).

What is COSMOS certification for?

COSMOS certification enables you to market your organic or natural cosmetics.

COSMOS certification guarantees:

  • Production and transformation processes that respect the environment and human health
  • Development of the green chemistry concept
  • Responsible use of natural resources
  • Respect for biodiversity
  • The absence of petrochemical ingredients (except authorized preservatives): parabens, phenoxyethanol, synthetic fragrances and colorants
  • Absence of GMOs
  • Recyclable packaging

Certification to the international COSMOS standard is the basis for labelling your natural or organic products. All products marketed with the COSMOS logo have been verified by a certification body, from composition and processing to packaging. Consumers thus have access to transparent information on the content of natural and organic ingredients indicated on products.

Applying the COSMOS logo to your products is a guarantee of quality for your customers.

Types of Certification

There are two types of certification: COSMOS ORGANIC and COSMOS NATURAL:

COSMOS NATURAL:

  • All ingredients used are of natural origin, with the exception of a restrictive list of approved ingredients (including preservatives) authorized in small quantities.
  • Of the total product, petrochemical origin is limited (list of authorized ingredients with maximum dosage), which ultimately results in a minimum of 95% ingredients of natural origin.

COSMOS ORGANIC:

A beauty product is COSMOS ORGANIC certified only if:

  • Petrochemical origin is limited (list of authorized ingredients with maximum dosage), which ultimately means a minimum of 95% ingredients of natural origin.
  • 95% minimum of organic ingredients out of all ingredients that can be organic (such as plants, beeswax, milk, etc.).
  • There is also a list of ingredients that must be ORGANIC in the formula (shea butter, sunflower oil, honey, coconut oil, etc.).
  • 20% minimum of organic ingredients in the total product (10% for rinse-off products and minerals – water and minerals are considered non-organic because they are not cultivated).
